8th Grade Field Trip to PA

I hope all of the 8th graders out there enjoyed the trip to PA today! I personally enjoyed the lunch St. Joe's Prep provided for us, the Freedom Rising show and the various hands on activities they offered.

I would like to take this trip next year but it is imperative we are on our best behavior when leaving the school. I am so excited we have these opportunities and I would like for them to continue.

I have read your thank you letters and I would like to say I am very impressed with a lot of them! Thank you for your thoughtful responses.

7th grade- thanks for being understanding with the classes you have had recently when I haven't been there. I count on you guys to help out when called upon and it seems like you are all coming through!

I look forward to tomorrow. I am at school right now getting the classroom ready for you guys...how does it get so messy???

Best Regards,

Mr. O

World History

7th grade -

This is a summary of what we are covering in class 2/12 and 2/13

After the death of Muhammad

*Died suddenly in 632

*Didn't name a successor

*Abu Bakr - one of Muhammad's advisers became the first caliph...what is the definition of a caliph?

*Died after only two years

*Umar was appointed

*There was tolerance as long as they were "people of the book"

*In Islam, the People of the Book are non-Muslim peoples who, according to the Qur'an, received scriptures which were revealed to them by God before the time of Muhammad, most notably Christians and Jews.

*644 Umar named a council...what is the definition of a council?

*Uthman expanded the empire/murdered in Egypt

*Conflict between Ali and Muawiya

Ali
*cousin and son-in-law of Muhammad, the Prophet of Islam, and fourth of the “rightly guided” caliphs, as the first four successors of Muhammad are called. Reigning from 656 to 661, he was the first imam (leader) of Shīʿism in all its forms. The question of his right to the caliphate (the political-religious structure comprising the community of Muslims and its territories that emerged after the death of Muhammad) resulted in the only major split in Islam, into the Sunni and Shīʿite branches.

Muawiya
*early Islāmic leader and founder of the great Umayyad dynasty of caliphs. He fought against the fourth caliph, ʿAlī (Muḥammad’s son-in-law), seized Egypt, and assumed the caliphate after ʿAlī’s assassination in 661. He restored unity to the Muslim empire and made Damascus its capital. He reigned from 661 to 680.

*661 Muawiya became caliph

For the differences between Shiites and Sunnis, make sure you make a neat Venn Diagram!

8th grade - What is to come in the next two weeks.

Gentleman,

We will be doing some time traveling. We are going to go from the 1500's to the late 1900's-2000's.

We are doing so because I have noticed that chapter 24 has peaked your interest.

We will be going BACK in time after we finish this section.

In chapter 24 we will cover familiar topics such as economy, education, health, culture, music, religion and race.

You will each be doing individual research and presenting a paper on individuals and topics mentioned in the chapter such as:

Oprah Winfrey, Bill Clinton's secretary of commerce Ronald Brown, Colin Powell, Tiger Woods, Henry Louis Gates, Michael Jordan, Oliver Harrington & Aaron McGruder, The Boondocks, HIV/AIDS, Rap, Bob and Ziggy Marley, NWA, John M, Murgess, Louis Farrakhan, Million Man March, Black Feminism, Rights for Gays and Lesbians.

FEEL FREE TO READ AHEAD FOR CHAPTER 24!
